40 Hour Mediation Training

Family and Community Mediation is pleased to offer a 40 hour  mediation certification training in collaboration with Metrowest Mediation Services located in Natick, MA (https://www.metrowestmediationservices.org/).  Metrowest will be providing 30 hours of the training and FCM will provide the remaining 10 hours. 

Cost: $1075

Dates/Times:

30 hour portion with MetroWest: July 12th, 14th, 17th, 19th, 21st   

8:30 am - 3:30 pm each day

10 hour portion with FCM: July 25 and 26 (9:00 am - 12 pm), and July 27 (8:00 am - 12:00 pm)

The MetroWest  component of the training prepares you to mediate  using a variety of methodologies including role-plays, simulated mediations, lectures, and discussion.  MetroWest’s mediation training is for anyone interested in learning to deal constructively with conflicts that arise in their personal and professional lives. Through this training participants will:

  • Develop proficiency in the facilitative model of mediation, which empowers parties to resolve their disputes.

  • Explore  perspectives of conflict as an opportunity for change.

  • Become a more effective listener through active listening skills such as the Listening Triangle.

  • Learn to manage the mediation process and deal with challenging parties.

  • Gain advanced mediation skills such as re-framing, identifying interests, and using neutral language.

  • Practice your skills in a series of simulated mediations and exercises.

Topics included in this training:

  • The Alternative Dispute Resolution Spectrum

  • The Five Styles of Dealing with Conflict

  • The Principles of Mediation

  • Mediation Models and the Facilitative Process

  • Positions and Interests

  • Overcoming Impasse

  • Negotiating Agreement

  • Critical Issues in Mediation: Ethical Dilemmas, Power Imbalance, Cultural Differences, and Bias Awareness.

Additionally, in order to help new mediators meet the 40 hour certification requirement in Maine, FCM is offering an addition 10 hours of training that will include the following topics:

  • Introduction to Transformative Mediation

  • Mediation Zoom skills

  • Skill intervention practice (roleplay)

  • Maine mediation opportunities
